The Phoenix Social Club was organized in 1872 and was Detroit's first Jewish social club. The club was organized by about 70 of the German- Jewish residents, mostly Temple Beth El members, as a literary society "for the furtherance of knowledge and enlightenment in general." At first the members met at the Old Kanter Hall on Larned. The club soon increased in membership and in 1875 moved into its new home on Woodward and Duffield, remaining in that location for 31 years. The Phoenix Club numbered among its membership the most prominent and influential Jews in Detroit. On its roster were also a number of prominent non-Jews.
In 1906 the club purchased a lot at John R. and Erskine and built a beautiful building which it occupied until its dissolution in 1942. Nate S. Shapero served as the last president of the club. |
