The Beth El College of Jewish Studies was founded in 1925 by Rabbi Leon Fram at Temple Beth El in order to give the men and women of the Detroit Jewish Community the opportunity for a systematic study of Jewish history, religion and the Bible, Hebrew, and the entire field of Jewish thought and literature. It was also to provide an institute of advanced Jewish study for the students who have completed High School in Temple Beth El's School of Religion and to train competent teachers and leaders for the Jewish religious schools, educational centers and communal activities of Detroit and the vicinity.
In 1967, the Metropolitan Detroit Federation of Reform Synagogues took over the College of Jewish Studies which was primarily dedicated to the in-service training of Religious School teachers in the Detroit area. By 1970 adult education courses in Jewish Studies were being offered. |
