The items in the Textile Collection cannot be specifically dated, but they can be placed into three chronological groups based on stylistic decoration and comparison.
The collection primarily contains Torah Mantles. Most of the mantles are embroidered in honor of, in memory of or dedicated to various past and present Temple members by other Temple members. The mantles with dedications are written primarily in English, though many contain a Hebrew dedication or a combination of the two. Any files in the archives that relate to the family names and members embroidered on the mantles will be noted in the individual object files.
The oldest grouping of Torah Mantles are made of velvet or satin and contain traditional Jewish symbols: the two lions of Judah, the two tablets of the Covenant, a crown, trees of life, flowering vines and colorful stones. Based on the aesthetics of these mantles it is speculated that they were are created by the same artist. Some of this group were donated by Irving
I. Katz.
The Torah Mantles of the second grouping are generally made of velvet and are decorated with variations of cording, fringe and embroidery. The stylistic design of this grouping also leads one to believe that they were all created by the same artist.
The third and most current grouping of Torah Mantles are made of a quilted material and contain various patterns of decorative embroidery that reflects a more modern age. The High Holy Days Mantles in this group were created by Jeanette Kuvin Oren in the 1990's, are currently in use by the Temple and replaced the ivory velvet highly decorated and embroidered mantles from the first grouping. The current High Holy Days Mantles are stored in the archive when they are not in use. All of the other mantles in the collection are retired and were replaced by new mantles that are currently in use at the Temple. They have not been photographed or catalogued and will not be until they are subsequently retired and stored in the archive to preserve
their history for future generations.
The Torah Ark Curtain and Tefilin and Talitot Bags appear to have been created around the time of the first grouping based on their stylistic decoration. The Bimah Mantles and Talitot appear to fall within the chronology of the second grouping, while the Matzah Covers and Kippahs (Yarmulkes) appear to fall within the third grouping. |
