Abstract The Allen A. Warsen Collection contains clippings, photographs, a 1907 Detroit Jewish Directory, awards, and articles written by Mr. Warsen.
Admin/Biog History Allen A. Warsen (b. 1903) was one of the founders of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan. Warsen's interest in forming an organization devoted to the study of local Jewish history begin in 1951. It was not until December 7, 1958, however, when he called a meeting of like-minded persons in his home, that his long hoped-for dream began to take form. The Jewish Historical Society of Michigan was officially formed on June 21, 1959. He was elected the society's first president serving two one-year terms and then was named honorary president for life. He served as editor of Michigan Jewish History from 1965 to 1970, and also contributed numerous articles.

Warsen taught in the Detroit Public Schools for 33 years before retiring in 1972. He was born in Warsaw and raised in Mlawa, a Polish town on the German border. He moved with is wife Sara to Detroit in 1932. He served for four years as chairman of the Yiddish Committee at the Jewish Community Center. In 1984, Warsen published a booklet of hismore than 250 book reviews from the Jewish News.
