The Jason and Mamie Tickton Collection contains clippings, correspondence, personal items, photographs and photograph albums, scrapbooks, journals, programs, certificates, a VHS video, plaques, prayer books, hymnals and various oversized items pertaining to Jason Tickton's involvement as Temple Beth El's Music Director and Organist, as a Professor of Music at Wayne State University and composer and performer of liturgical music. |

Jason and Mamie Tickton were vital members of the Jewish community. Jason was born on January 2, 1914 and died on June 13, 1989. He was the Music Director and Organist at Temple Beth El for 55 (1933-1988) years; a faculty member and Professor of Music at Wayne State University for 47 years (1937-1984); a lecturer for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for 5 years; a composer of liturgical music, which has been performed in over 400 Temples in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel; an author of many articles published in magazines and newspapers; performed 29 public organ recitals; and conducted a Wayne State University Radio Course, "Introduction to Music Literature," for a period of 10 years over WDET FM radio.
Jason married Mamie (Maldawsky) in 1940. They had one son, Dr. Stanley Tickton, who is a Professor of Mass Communication at Norfolk State University in Virginia, and three grandchildren. Jason received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Music from Wayne State University in 1936 and1937, respectively. Jason' s father was Daniel L. Tickton and his brother was Sidney Tickton.
Jason Tickton was also the winner of the "Adult Education Prize for Creativity in the Arts" in May of 1960 and May of 1963 and winner of the "President's Award for Excellence in Teaching" in June of 1977. |
