Abstract The Die Deborah Newspaper Collection contains photostatic copies of sections of the Die Deborah, translations from the original German to English, clippings using the translations, and correspondence regarding the acquisition of the photostatic copies and translations.
Admin/Biog History In 1854, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise founder of American Reform Judaism, came to Cincinnati to occupy the pulpit of Congregation B'nai Yeshurun. A few months after his arrival, he established the Israelite, an English-Jewish weekly, and in 1855 he added a German language supplement called the Deborah. Both newspapers contain reports from the then existing Jewish congregations in the country. The reports from Detroit were written by the rabbis or members of Temple Beth El. These reports constitute some of the missing links of early history of Temple Beth El.
