The Jewish American, Detroit's first English-Jewish weekly appeared on October 5, 1900. The Jewish American was originally published by the Jewish Review and Observer of Cleveland, Ohio, as its Detroit Edition, with Emanuel T. Berger as Managing Editor. A year later, the paper was purchased by Solomon M. Goldsmith of Detroit and on October 18, 1901, The Jewish American became the official organ of Temple Beth El, with Rabbi Leo M. Franklin as Editor and S. M. Goldsmith as Publisher.
On January 1, 1904 Rabbi Franklin relinquished the editorship of the The Jewish American but the paper continued as the official organ of Temple Beth El. IN 1908, Goldsmith died, and in 19190, The Jewish American ceased to serve as the official organ of Temple Beth El. The last issue of The Jewish American appeared on May 12, 1911. |
