| Abstract |
The Henry Zirndorf Israelite Notes Collection contains handwritten note cards taken by Zirndorf from The Israelite, c. 1854-1882. Zirndorf arranged his notes by subject, location, or date, always including the volume and page number of the paper he was quoting or taking notes from. The Israelite was a weekly periodical devoted to the religious history, literature and events of the Jewish community. The notes taken by Zirndorf included (in his own words): 1. All items pertaining to charitable organizations of any kind. 2. All items regarding organization of new congregations or building of synagogues. 3. Items on burial societies and cemeteries. 4. Zion Collgiate Associations and Zion College. 5. Educational societies and Jewish Schools. |

Rabbinical scholar, writer and poet, Henry (Heinrich) Zirndorf was born in Furth, Bavaria, Germany in 1829. He was educated privately and at the Munich Gymnasium. In 1876 he received a call to be rabbi of Detroit's Temple Beth El. During his ministry in Detroit (1876-1884) Zirndorf established the Temple Library and re-organized the Religious School. He was one of the founders of the Hebrew Ladies' Sewing Society, which assisted Jewish refugees from Russia. In 1884 Zirndorf became professor of history and literature at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. At the same time he became a regular contributor to the magazine, Die Deborah (the German-language insert to the Israelite), and subsequently became its associate editor. He died in Cincinnati in1893. |
