Abstract The Franklin Memorial Lectures and Awards Collection contains books, clippings, correspondence, committee meeting minutes, and photographs pertaining to the events and programs of the Franklin Memorial Lectures and Awards that were presented from c. 1949-1989.
Admin/Biog History In 1949 the Leo M. Franklin Memorial Fund Committee of Temple Beth El announced the establishment of the Leo M. Franklin Chair in Human Relations at Wayne State University. Under the terms of the grant, a faculty committee each year recommended to the president of the university a member of the faculty who was to be named the Franklin Memorial Professor for the following year. It became his/her duty to organize and present a series of lectures, by him/herself and others, dealing with some significant contemporary aspect of human relations. In 1978, the Leo M. Franklin Memorial Fund Committee changed with the times and created the Leo M. Franklin Memorial Award in Human Relations, co-sponsored by Temple Beth El and Wayne State University, which replaced the Lecture series. The award could be given to students, alumnus, faculty members or individuals identified by Wayne State University who had made a significant contribution in the field of human relations worthy of community recognition.
