| Abstract |
The Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer Collection contains much of the Rabbi's personal papers and materials. There are programs, correspondence, news clippings and ephemera relating to his recruitment and installation as Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth El, including correspondence with Dr. Leo M. Franklin, his predecessor. There is a sampling of his writings, publications, sermons, sermon notecards, and Bible class notecards from his days in Pittsburgh. There is correspondence, ephemera, and obituary clippings relating to his death. There is a folder of material pertinent to his wife, Mrs. Ada Glazer, as well as one containing material concerning the Glazer Elementary School in Detroit. There are two folders of photographs, three boxes of oversized materials, which include two scrapbooks of news clippings, certificates, diplomas, plaques, and other gifts. There are wire recordings and vinyl discs of some of his speeches. There are samples of photographs from the collection in the image database. |

Recognized as one of the leading rabbis in the United States, Dr. Babel Benedict Glazer was born in Dallas, TX on August 18, 1902, the son of Rabbi Simon Glazer and Mrs. Ida Cantor Glazer. He received his elementary and high school education in Montreal, Canada, and received his B.A. from the University of Cincinnati in 1922. In 1926, he received his M.A. from the University of Cincinnati and was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew Union College. In 1938, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. His first assignment was based in Pittsburgh as Regional Rabbi of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. In 1927, he became Assistant Rabbi of Congregation Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh. In 1934, he became Senior Associate Rabbi of Temple Emanu El in New York City, the nation's largest Jewish congregation. In 1941, Dr. Glazer was called to succeed the retiring Dr. Leo M. Franklin as Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth El in Detroit, MI. Active in social justice movements and a promoter of
inter-faith relations, Dr. Glazer was known for being at the forefront of many struggles for basic human rights. He was a tireless fighter for improved conditions in Michigan's mental health facilities and against various forms of racial and religious discrimination. He chaired or was a member of countless public bodies and committees serving Detroit and Michigan. Considered a forceful and eloquent preacher, Dr. Glazer was always in great demand as a speaker, locally and nationally. On September 11, 1938, Dr. Glazer wed Miss Ada Spiegle of Pittsburgh. They had two children, Stephanie and Mark. Dr. Glazer died suddenly on May 15, 1952, as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 49. The Glazer Elementary School in Detroit, MI, dedicated May 15, 1967, bears his name. |

Dr. Glazer founded the Institute on Judaism for the Clergy of Detroit, an annual inter-faith conference held at Temple Beth El, in 1943. The Institute was later named after Dr. Glazer and his wife. A separate collection of its materials is also housed in the Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archives. Additional material on Dr. Glazer can also be found in the Burton Collection (boxes 80-101), housed at the Franklin Archives. The LP records of Dr. Glazer's speeches are located in a separate storage box in the Franklin Archives, which contains discs from various collections. |
