Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer founded the first annual "Institute on Judaism for the Clergyman and Religious Educators of Detroit," held on March 1, 1943. It was a time of especially high racial and religious tension in Detroit. Dr. Glazer gathered a few Protestant ministers at Temple Beth El to spend the day listening to an outstanding authority on Judaism and sharing each other's traditions in order to promote better understanding and mutual respect. The event grew year by year, becoming a tradition at Temple Beth El. After the death of Dr. Glazer, the Institute was named after him, and his wife Ada assumed an active role in the selection of scholars and the organization of the event. After her death in 1999, her name was added to that of the Institute as well. The Institute has become one of the foremost programs of its kind in the country. It has grown from a gathering of Protestants to include leaders of the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Muslim faiths.
Through the years, the Institute's fullname has changed many times, reflecting the changing nature and scope of the Institute.
