Abstract The 1952-53 Rabbi Selection Collection contains correspondence between the members of the Rabbi Selection Committee relevant to the Rabbi search, as well as correspondence with and concerning candidates for the position. Correspondence with and concerning Dr. Kahn and Dr. Hertz are separated from the other candidates. There are news clippings concerning Dr. Hertz's appointment, and congratulatory correspondence to Dr. Hertz and Temple Beth El.
Admin/Biog History Upon the sudden death of Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer on May 15, 1952, the Rabbi's Selection Committee was formed in June 1952 in order to select a new Senior Rabbi for Temple Beth El. Utilizing the services of the Rabbinical Placement Committee, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and numerous other prominent leaders in the Reform Jewish movement, the Committee investigated several candidates from around the country, eventually settling on Dr. Robert I. Kahn of Houston, TX.
Following Dr. Kahn's sudden change of heart just before his placement was to be announced at a special Congregational meeting on November 10, 1952, the Committee went back to work. They selected Dr. Richard C. Hertz of Chicago as Temple Beth El's new Senior Rabbi in January of 1953. Dr. Hertz went on to serve Temple Beth El as Senior Rabbi until his retirement in 1982. He than served as Rabbi Emeritus until his death in 1999.
