The National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (NFTS) was started in January of 1913. The founder and first president, Mrs. Carrie Simon, believed that the time had come for Sisterhoods across the nation and the world to ban together for the progress of Reform Judaism. The NFTS was born because Mrs. Simon appreciated the lessons that local Sisterhoods had to learn from each other and the effectiveness of united effort. The objectives of the NFTS are to bring all Sisterhoods into closer cooperation and association, to stimulate spiritual and educational activity, to advance Judaism and to serve Jewish and humanitarian causes, and to cooperate with Union of American Hebrew Congregations, NFTS' parent group. The Sisterhood of Temple Beth EL is a member of the NFTS. Through membership in NFTS, The Sisterhood of Temple Beth El participates in Biennial Assemblies, Michigan Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, District 11 and is a part of national community services such as YES (Youth, Education, Sisterhood) Fund,
World Union, national Braille bindery projects, supports Hebrew Union College and a variety of other humanitarian causes. In the late 1990's, The National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods changed their name to The Women of Reform Judaism.
