Abstract The Detroit 300 Collection contains clippings, educational materials, posters, a video, correspondence and photographs relating to Temple Beth El's inclusion in the celebration of the 300th Birthday of the City of Detroit in 2001.
Admin/Biog History In 2001 Detroit, Michigan celebrated it's 300th birthday. There were many programs and events conducted for this celebration and Temple Beth El played a role in many of them. On New Years Day in 2001, the 1901 century box was opened by Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer. In this time capsule there were letters written in 1901 from the Jewish community, including one from Louis Blitz, President of Temple Beth El. Temple Beth El was selected as a Heritage Organization (groups founded in Detroit for at least 50 years). There was a program in January of 2001 honoring all of the Heritage Organizations, all of whose names were inscribed on a custom sterling silver trophy which is on display at the Detroit Historical Museum. Also on display at the Detroit Historical Museum in 2000 and 2001 was the "30 Who Dared" exhibit, which profiled Rabbi Leo M. Franklin as one of the 30 individuals selected who left a substantial legacy in the metro Detroit area. Information about the Jewish community and Temple Beth El was also provided for the National Society of the Colonial Dames of Michigan for a laminated poster and a series of information cards entitled "History in Our Neighborhoods - Early Detroit Churches."
