Abstract The Hannah Schloss Memorial Building Collection contains clippings, photographs, a ledger book and history notes. It also contains materials relating to the Hannah Schloss Old Timers group.
Admin/Biog History Built in 1903, the Hannah Schloss Memorial Building was Detroit's first Jewish community service building, situated in the heart of the then Jewish district as the headquarters of the United Jewish Charities (UJC). At a meeting of the executive board of UJC on January 6, 1903, it was announced that Seligman Schloss offered a contribution to the building fund for the proposed center ($5,800), then the largest gift in the history of the Detroit Jewish community in memory of his wife Hannah. The architect of the two-story and basement, pressed red brick building was Albert Kahn. The building was named in honor of Hannah Schloss, wife of Seligman Schloss. Hannah was one of the founders of the Hebrew Ladies Sewing Society in 1882 and served as its president from 1882 to the time of her untimely passing in 1898. The Hebrew Sewing Society became an organization of the UJC.
