Abstract The University of Michigan Jewish Student Congregation Collection contains clippings, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin's correspondence, programs, and year books c. 1914-1926. The collection also contains clippings, correspondence and notes about the Student Congregation from Irving Katz, 1977.
Admin/Biog History In 1914, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin of Temple Beth El organized the Jewish Student Congregation at the University of Michigan. The Jewish Student Congregation was the first of its kind in the United States and a fore runner of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation in the United States. The Jewish Student Congregation disbanded in 1926 when the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation at the University of Michigan was established, the third to be organized in the United States.
