Abstract Rabbi Leon Fram Papers: c. 1925-1941 collection contains correspondence, notes, clippings, articles, sermons, lectures, pamphlets, programs, reports, membership lists and cards, receipts, and booklets from Rabbi Fram's records in the inclusive years as rabbi and director of the Religious School of Congregation Beth El.
Admin/Biog History Leon Fram was born December 12, 1895, in Rosienney, Russia. The youngest of five children born to Michael and Leah Fram, he was brought to the United States by his sister, Jennie. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, attended public school there and won a scholarship in chemistry to John Hopkins University.

He was influenced to enter the Rabbinate by Rabbi William Rosenau, and enrolled in the Hebrew Union College in 1916, at the same time studying at the University of Cincinnati. He graduated both of these institutions with honors, and later obtained a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati. In 1954 he received a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, from the Hebrew Union College.

Rabbi Fram served Temple Judea, Chicago from 1920-25 and became a rabbi and Educational Director at Temple Beth El in 1925, staying until 1941 when he left to found Temple Israel.

The High school at the Religious School of Temple Beth El became a model for all Temples in the country and most of the principles he started were adopted in large by the Reform congregations of America.

He was the founder of the College of Jewish Studies, a pioneer in adult education, and a writer of numerous articles and stories printed locally and nationally. He died at the age of 91 in March of 1987.
