A Rabbi, he received smichah (ordination) in Riga, Latvia before coming to America. He was the fourth generation to be ordained a Rabbi. He was married to former Gail Peres and had two daughters: Nina Claire and Myrna. He earned his BA in Cleveland. During his college years, he was active in Zionist youth groups. In Cleveland, Mr. Katz was the Synagogue Administrator and Education Director of the Oheb Zedek Congregation from 1927 to 1936.
