| Admin/Biog History |
In the 1970s, Temple Beth El moved from the corner of Woodward and Gladstone in Detroit, to its present site at the corner of Telegraph and Fourteen Mile in Birmingham (now West Bloomfield). Dr. Richard C. Hertz was the Rabbi, Rabbi Morton M. Kanter (1964-1973), Rabbi Joseph Guteman (1973-1974), and Dannel I. Schwartz (1974-1982) were Assistant Rabbis, James J. Levbarg (1966-1973) and Rabbi Jeffrey B. Lazar (1974-1978) were Educational Directors, and Irving I. Katz was the Executive Secretary. A bond drive was held for Israel in 1975 and Rabbi Hertz celebrated his 25th anniversary in 1978. In 1971, the ground breaking ceremony took place for the new synagogue with the cornerstone ceremony taking place in 1973. The dedication of Temple Beth El and the dinner dedication dance both took place in 1974. Minoru Yamasaki's architectural firm (who also designed the World Trade Center) was hired to design the temple and construction begun in 1972. A building fund campaign was launched in 1970 and came to a climax
in 1974. Project Solomon was launched in 1975. This projected provided the opportunity for temple members to express their opinions through a questionnaire. This survey focused questions about Jewishness and what it meant to temple members, activities at Temple Beth El, educational programs, views on the rabbi, Sabbath services, music, and dues. The survey ends with a host of questions about the individual member, which include marital statues, number of children, education, and occupation. There were over 500 responses which are recorded on index cards. All costs that were related to building and funding the new temple are recorded in the collection. |
